Pios Rally but Fall Short as Allegheny Walks Off With Win

TUCSON, Ariz.- Carroll University (4-2, 0-0 CCIW) came back from down five runs early, but fell in the bottom of the ninth to Allegheny College on Sunday afternoon by the final of 13-12.

The Pioneers found themselves trailing early as Allegheny tallied three runs in the first and two in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead going into the fourth.

Carroll would start to chip away at the Gator's lead in the top of the fourth. Hunter Frey would lead off the inning and get hit by a pitch while attempting to bunt and score on an AJ Johnson RBI double to deep center field to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Pios would tie the game up in the top of the fifth inning.  Jake Langford and Sam Harmeyer would both single with one out to start the rally.  Frey would single to left-center to drive home Langford with the first run of the inning.  Following a strike out for the second out, Dylan Callahan would triple down the right field line to score Harmeyer and Frey.  Nolan Heck would promptly drive in Callahan to knot the game at five.

Allegheny would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out solo homerun to left field to make it 6-5 going into the sixth.

For the second straight inning Carroll would put four runs on the board in the sixth, all after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Langford and Harmeyer would both single to start the rally.  Frey would triple to center field to drive both in to give the Pios the 7-6 lead.
Johnson would then double to score Frey and Callahan would double to score Johnson giving Carroll the 9-6 lead.

The Gators would tally a single unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-7.

Carroll would extend the lead as they added three more runs in the top of the seventh on a Harmeyer ground rule double to score Ethan Burns and a Frey double to score Harmeyer and Jacob Horner to extend the lead to 12-7.

Allegheny would score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one at 12-11.

After a clean eighth inning, Carroll would cling to a one run lead heading to the bottom of the ninth inning.  A single off the end of the bat that just caught the corner of third base started the inning. A hit by pitch and sacrifice bunt would put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out.  A walk and second hit batter would tie the score at twelve before a walk-off single to right field would seal the 13-12 victory for the Gators.

Carroll University is back on the diamond on Monday afternoon as they face Oberlin College at 3:30pm local time.
