Morland and Bullpen Shut Out Millikin

CAROL STREAM, Ill. – Carroll University (14-14, 3-12 CCIW) claimed a hard fought 1-0 shutout victory on Saturday night over Millikin University (15-14, 5-10 CCIW).

Carroll, playing as the home team due to poor field conditions in Waukesha, would score the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Dylan Callahan would drive a ball deep to right-center that one hopped the wall to lead-off the inning.  Zach Meyer would promptly drive in Callahan on a line-drive single to center field with the eventual winning run.

Starting pitcher Alex Morland (1-2) was masterful in his fifth start of the season.  Morland would work six shut-out innings, scattering two hits while striking out a pair.

Jacob Horner would enter in relief in the seventh inning, retiring the first two batters he faced before giving up back-to-back singles to put runners at first and third.  Freshman Curtis Sheahan would enter and strike out the Millikin pinch-hitter to end the rally and hold the 1-0 lead for the Pioneers.

Sheahan would work around a lead-off single to start the eighth inning, stranding the Millikin runner at third before handing over the 1-0 lead in the ninth.

Max Maney would enter in the ninth for the Pios and lock down the victory getting the final two batters to pop-up to second to close the deal and earn his third save of the season.

The Pioneers will return to Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream on Sunday afternoon for a double-header with Millikin starting at 1pm.
