MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Carroll University (21-15, 8-12 CCIW) split a non-conference double-header with Wisconsin Lutheran College on Monday afternoon, taking the opener 12-4 and dropping the night-cap 2-0.
Game one saw the Pioneers build a 12-0 lead while starting pitcher, Andrew Stone, cruised through five innings. Stone (5-1) struck out five and allowed just four hits to earn the win on the mound for Carroll.
Michael Rufer led the offense finishing the game 3x3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Game two the offense sputtered for the Pios as they managed just four hits and managed to advance only one runner to second base.
The lack of offense undid a great start from Brett Zickert. Zickert, making the spot start, worked four innings allowing only one baserunner on a swinging bunt single in the fourth inning.
Wisconsin Lutheran would plate the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. A lead-off walk to the ninth place hitter would spell trouble for the Pios. A stolen base and single to left would put runners at the corners with no outs. Following a second stolen base and a strike out, the Warriors would attempt a suicide squeeze. The bunt was elevated and the Carroll pitcher had a chance to catch the ball in the air, but couldn't hang on as the ball fell to the ground and the first run of the game scored. A sacrifice fly from the next batter would plate the second run.
Carroll won't have time to dwell on the loss as they return to conference action on Tuesday as they host Elmhurst at 4pm.
