Struggles continue for Pioneers

Maupin, Penny, Clarey each score team-high 15 points in CCIW road loss to Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Junior forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) registered a double-double by contributing 15 points with 6 of 8 free throws and one basket from 3-point range, a team-best 11 rebounds and two assists as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to in-state rival Carthage College 79-66 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Tarble Arena on Wednesday night.
It was the third consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 1-6 in the league standings and 5-11 overall.
The Pioneers were outscored 36-26 in the momentum-shifting first half, including what proved to be a key 7-0 run over a key two-minute stretch.
Carroll showcased its resilience in the second half, trimming the deficit to 61-58 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Ryan Clarey (Pewaukee, Wis.) with 7:56 remaining but couldn't get any closer.
Junior guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) had 15 points, including three 3-pointers and 6 of 7 free throws for Carroll, which made 10 3-pointers, 16 of 20 free throws and shot 37 percent from field-goal range. Clarey also chipped in 15 points with three 3-pointers, a team-high four assists, two rebounds and a steal to round out the Pioneers' trio of scoring leaders.
Freshman forward Blake Williams (Lone Tree, Colo.) followed with seven points and senior guard Troy Howat (Plainfield, Ill.) added six points.
Sophomore 6-foot-10 center Sean Johnson finished with a game-high 17 points, six blocked shots, five rebounds and four assists for Carthage, which improved to 2-4 in conference and 7-8 overall. Junior guard Jordan Kedrowski and junior forward Kienan Baltimore each had 16 points for the Red Men, who made eight 3-pointers, 17 of 20 free throws and shot 52.9 percent from the field. 
Senior guard Mike Canady added 15 points for Carthage, which scored 30 points in the paint.
