Pioneers experience tough homecoming setback

Missed opportunities become factor in frustrating CCIW loss to Millikin

WAUKESHA, Wis. - It wasn't quite the type of warm, happy homecoming that the Carroll University football team had envisioned.
With blustery, howling winds, frigid temperatures and overcast skies to provide the backdrop, Carroll lost to Millikin University 30-7 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the fourth consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 0-4 in the league standings and 1-4 overall with the frustrating Homecoming Weekend setback.
Following a scoreless opening 15 minutes, Millikin scored 12 unanswered points in the momentum-shifting second quarter - including what proved to be the winning points on a 5-yard touchdown run by junior running back Ladavion Serverado to cap a 12-play, 61-yard drive with 3:41 remaining in the first half.
Severado rushed 28 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Big Blue, who amassed 23 first downs and 386 yards of total offense - 227 yards coming behind its bruising ground attack anchored by a large, versatile offensive line.
Carroll went three-and-out on five of its six drives in the first half.
Faced with the daunting challenge of working against the strong winds, the Pioneers came out focused on the opening possession of the third quarter and responded with what appeared to be a poised, potential momentum-shifting four-minute 14-play, 49-yard drive.
The momentum was short-lived as the drive stalled at the Millikin 13-yard line, resulting in a blocked 33-yard field goal attempt.
After coming up with a blocked punt on Carroll's next possession, the Big Blue took advantage of good field position - scoring two plays later on a 9-yard pass from junior quarterback Cal Pohrte to 6-foot-3 sophomore wide receiver Colton Lockwood to extend the lead to 18-0 with 6:11 left - ultimately putting the game out of reach.
Pohrte completed 16 of 31 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns for Millikin, which outscored the Pioneers 18-7 in the second half.
Junior quarterback Michael Johnson (West Allis, Wis.) completed 11 of 32 passes for 167 yards, connecting with freshman wide receiver J.R. Muth (Greendale, Wis.) on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 12:34 left in the fourth quarter to cap a five-play, 80-yard drive for Carroll - which finished with 10 first downs and 233 total yards.
"It was definitely a tough game, tough loss and obviously not the outcome we had expected or hoped for," Johnson said. "We have to continue to grow, keep improving each time we step on the field and come together as a team. Personally, I didn't play the game I wanted to play and just need to get better along with the players around me. It was tough throwing into the wind but we don't use it as an excuse for what happened today.
"Looking back on the day, it was a great crowd, great atmosphere and on every good play you could hear the big roar from everyone in the stands. Even though it didn't work out, it was awesome to be a part of the experience."
Sophomore wide receiver Alex Kujawa (Oshkosh, Wis.) finished with three receptions for 60 yards for the Pioneers, who converted just 3 of 16 times on third down in the contest. Freshman wide receiver Austin Eichstaedt (Cudahy, Wis.) added three catches for 53 yards.
Junior linebacker Justin Kontny (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with a team-high 12 tackles and senior defensive back Peter Dombai (Chicago, Ill.) contributed 11 tackles for the Carroll defense. Senior defensive back Justin Robles (Rockford, Ill.) and sophomore cornerback Jordan Gaulke (Green Bay, Wis.) each had an interception.
"I told the guys during the week that we weren't going to quit so we used our remaining timeouts and played football until the very end. It's the Pioneer Way," Carroll ninth-year head coach Mark Krzykowski said. "In the first half, we did pretty well, kept it within reach and just needed to get the offense going a little more to capitalize on some of the opportunities.
"Coming out of halftime, we were motivated and ready to go. Unfortunately, on the opening drive when we moved the ball downfield, we couldn't put the ball in the end zone to trim the deficit. We just need to keep working on making plays and do our best to improve in all three phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams). The weather was the same for both sides so we don't use it as an excuse when it comes to the final result. We had some key injuries but continued to take a next-man-up mentality to battle through the situation. It was disappointing to lose on homecoming but I was proud of their effort. We just have to learn from the experience, use it as we prepare to face a top-15 ranked team in North Central next week and move forward."
