Slow start derails Pioneers in CCIW road loss

Carroll falls to North Central in challenging league matchup

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Freshman midfielder/defender Ryan Coughlin (Crystal Lake, Ill.) converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University men's soccer team lost to North Central College 3-1 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Saturday night.
Carroll, which suffered its third consecutive conference loss, dropped to 0-3 in the league standings and 7-5 overall.
North Central, which improved to 3-1 in conference and 8-4-1 overall, scored two goals within the opening five minutes of the game - including what became the eventual winning unassisted shot by senior forward Andreas Kristiansson at the 4:56 mark.
Junior defender Spencer Wiese and junior forward/midfielder Elmer Eng each added a goal for North Central, which outshot the Pioneers 11-10 in the battle.
Senior striker Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) generated three shots on goal for Carroll, which maintained a 6-5 shot-on-goal advantage but couldn't finish on the opportunities. Sophomore midfielder Charlie Shaver (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore midfielder Dom DeLuca (New Berlin, Wis.) each added an attempt.
Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Hanson (Eau Claire, Wis.) registered two saves in playing the entire way for the Pioneers.
