Pioneers come up short in fierce Senior Day conference battle

Program honors contributions of nine seniors in home-field loss to Illinois Wesleyan

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Senior striker Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season off an assist freshman defender Ricky Perez (Stevens Point, Wis.) at the 78:52 mark as the Carroll University men's soccer team lost to Illinois Wesleyan University 2-1 in a physical, hard-fought College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the third conference loss by a one-goal margin this season for Carroll, which dropped to 0-6 in the league standings and 7-8 overall with the Senior Day performance.
The game took on added meaning as the team's nine seniors including Connell, goalkeeper Mathias Holm (Marshfield, Wis.), defender Peanut Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), defender Mark Bayer (Waukesha, Wis.), defender Issey Valadez (Milwaukee, Wis.), midfielder Austin Schulze (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), midfielder Gabriel Mundo (Highwood, Ill.), midfielder Jake McChrystal (Stevens Point, Wis.) and midfielder/forward Matt Quint (Waukesha, Wis.) were honored for their lasting contributions to the program.
Holm registered five saves in playing the entire 90 minutes for the Pioneers, who were outshot 17-13 in the contest, including a key 7-4 shot-on-goal margin.
Trevor Martin scored off an assist from Doug Ballard in the 12th minute and Patrick Hickey finished on what became the winning unassisted shot at the 74:47 mark for fourth-place Illinois Wesleyan, which improved to 4-2 in conference and 8-7 overall.
