Pioneers cruise to nonconference road victory

Connell scores winning goal as Carroll registers fifth shutout of the season

WINONA, Minn. - Senior striker Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) scored what became the eventual winning goal, his team-leading 12th of the season, on an unassisted shot 42 seconds into the contest as the Carroll University men's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's University (Minn.) 3-0 in a nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field on Wednesday night.
It was the fifth shutout victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 7-4 overall.
Freshman defender Ricky Perez (Stevens Point, Wis.) followed with a goal off an assist from Connell at the 18:32 mark to extend the lead to 2-0 for the Pioneers, who outshot Saint Mary's by a slim 14-13 margin - including a key 8-7 shot-on-goal advantage.
Carroll's final goal came as sophomore midfielder Dom DeLuca (New Berlin, Wis.) converted for the first time at the collegiate level, finishing on an assist from senior defender Peanut Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) in the 66th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Hanson (Eau Claire, Wis.) registered seven saves in 90 minutes to preserve a shutout.
Saint Mary's dropped to 4-7 overall.
