Carroll improves to 3-0

Williams scores career-high 27 points as Pios win in first round of Bill Merris Tourney; Combs earns 299th career victory

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Blake Williams (Lone Tree, Colo.) finished with a career-high 27 points with three baskets from 3-point range, 6 of 8 free throws, team-best nine rebounds, three steals, an assist and a blocked shot in playing 29 minutes as the Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Central College 73-62 in the opening round of Illinois College's Bill Merris Tip-Off Tournament at Sherman Gymnasium on Friday evening.
It was the third consecutive nonconference victory of the early season for Carroll, which improved to 3-0 overall and will face Illinois College in the championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The first-round road performance took on added significance as it marked the first time Carroll has won its first three games since the start of the 2016-17 season.
It was also the 299th career victory for Carroll head coach Paul Combs, in his seventh season with the Pioneers and 21st at the collegiate level.
Williams, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward who scored 16 points in the first half, led a balanced offensive attack for Carroll as seven players reached the scoring column (including three in double figures).
Senior forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.) followed with 15 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot for Carroll, which made six 3-pointers, 17 of 22 free throws and shot 49 percent from field-goal range. Senior forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Junior guards Ryan Clarey (Pewaukee, Wis.) and  Tarren Hall (New Lisbon, Wis.) each had six points with senior guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) - who earned CCIW Player of the Week honors - adding five points.
Carroll outscored the Dutch 37-23 in the first half, including a 27-11 run over the course of the final 15 minutes.
The Pioneers led 13-12 with 14:19 remaining and seized the momentum by scoring eight unanswered points over a critical five minute stretch - powered on a jumper by Maupin, a free throw by Williams, a 3-pointer by junior guard Justin Gruber (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and layup from Soule.
Central, which dropped to 0-3 overall, outscored the Pioneers 39-36 in the second half - trimming the deficit to six points on a layup with 3:10 left in the game - but couldn't get any closer.
Carroll maintained a statement-making 33-31 rebound advantage, accentuated with a 28-23 advantage on the defensive glass.
Caden Mauck scored 17 points for Central, which made six 3-pointers, 14 of 20 free throws and shot 39.6 percent from the field.
