Ripon, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers ended the first quarter with a two point lead, but the women went cold in the second quarter, leading to a 63-48 loss against the Ripon College Redhawks on Saturday. Sophomore
Katie Evans led the Pios with 10 points in 30 minutes of action.
The Pioneers, now 2-3 on the season, shot an uncharacteristic 17-58 (28.8%) from the floor for the game, including 5-30 (16.7%) in the first half. Evans was the only Pio to score in double digits. Freshman
Brooke Foster led the bench scoring with 8 points, and a tied for a team high 5 rebounds. Sophomore
Alyssa Cruz assisted on five made Pioneer baskets. The Pioneers found themselves in foul trouble, with four players collecting four fouls.
The Pios started strong out of the gate, highlighted from three pointers from Evans and Foster. But in the second quarter, the Pioneers were only able to muster a lay-up from
Kate Christian (6 pts, 3 reb, 2 stl) and a free throw from
Sierra Grubor (1 pt, 5 reb). They found themselves down by 12 at halftime. The Redhawks made 7 of 9 free throws to the Pioneers' one in the first half.
The women started the third quarter on a 9-4 run, started from points from
Amanda Hooks and Evans, and ended the quarter down seven. Sophomore
Theresa Wichser scored all nine of her points in one minute in the fourth quarter (including an and-1 three pointer), but couldn't overcome Ripon's 14-4 run to start the fourth quarter in route to the loss.
The women kick-off CCIW play next week, starting with a home showdown against North Park Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 PM.
