Carroll finishes Florida tourney on high note

Pioneers defeat Husson 83-59 in final game of Daytona Beach Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Husson University 83-59 in its final game of the Daytona Beach Shootout at the Ocean Center on Sunday evening.
It was the second contest of a challenging Florida holiday trip for Carroll, which finished the tournament with a 1-1 record and improved to 9-3 overall.
The Pioneers outscored Husson 36-23 in the first half, highlighted by what proved to be a decisive 22-8 run over the course of a key, momentum-shifting 11-minute stretch.
Junior guard Tarren Hall, who finished with seven points, converted two 3-point baskets during the scoring surge - highlighted by a long-range shot to ignite the key run and extend the lead to 15-11 with 13:22 remaining.
Carroll showcased its depth and balance with 13 players reaching the scoring column, including two in double figures.
Senior guard Nick Penny, a second-team all-conference selection in the CCIW last season, contributed a team-high 18 points with three 3-pointers, 5 of 6 free throws, three rebounds and an assist in playing 25 minutes for the Pioneers, who displayed their unselfishness by generating 14 assists. Junior guard Ryan Clarey followed with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Senior forward Kale Maupin followed with eight points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist for Carroll, which made 10 3-pointers, 17 of 28 free throws and shot 45.9 percent from field-goal range. Senior forward Charlie Soule chipped in eight points with 3 of 4 free throws, six rebounds and a steal. Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams added seven points with 3 of 4 free throws, six rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal.
