TUCSON, Ariz. - Carroll University (1-3, 0-0 CCIW) opened up their annual spring trip with a convincing 11-1 win on Friday morning over North Central University (MN).
The Rams of North Central would take the early lead as the second batter of the game would triple and score on batter later on an RBI ground out to take the 1-0 advantage.
The Pioneers would immediately answer in the bottom of the first as freshman Adam Baade would single with one out and score on a frozen rope home run over the left field fence off the bat of senior Mathew Putman for the 2-1 lead.
Carroll would add four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Justin Baker would double to the left-center gap, Sam Harmeyer would single and freshman Trevor Benz would collect his first collegiate hit, a three run homerun to deep left field. Freshman Josh Kolb would reach on a fielding error, steal second base and score on a two-out single off the bat of Baade to give the Pios the 6-1 lead.
Baade and Putman would both single to start the bottom of the seventh and both score on a triple to right center by Dylan Callahan. Callahan would promptly score on a Baker line-drive single to push the Carroll lead to 9-1.
Sophomore Mitch Massino would deliver the final blow as a double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning would plate the final two runs for Carroll as they would walk-off with the mercy rule 11-1 victory.
Offensively, Putman would continue his torrid start, finishing the day 4x5 with a homerun, double and a pair of RBI. Baade would record his first collegiate three hit performance, finishing the day 3x5 with three runs scored.
Senior Cameron Godinsky was brilliant on the mound. After surrendering the early run, Godinsky would give up just five more hits in the game to earn the victory. Godinsky would need just 67 pitches over his eight innings of work.
Carroll returns to action on Saturday as the face perennial MIAC power St. Thomas at 12:30pm MST.
