BOSTON, Mass. - David Lembke, a junior from Pewaukee, Wis., won a national title in the men's high jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College on Friday night.
Lembke, who entered the competition tied for fifth in the nation, finished with a winning height of 2.15m (7'00.50) - establishing a Carroll school record in the process by shattering the prior indoor mark of 2.10m (6-11) set by former standout Andrew Nottling in 2015.
Lembke, the reigning College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin champion in the event, edged top-ranked St. John Fisher sophomore Kyle Rollins to secure his first national championship and All-American honors.
"It was an amazing battle to watch," said Carroll head track and field coach Shawn Thielitz, of the remarkable performance in the finals. "Both jumpers were class acts, encouraged each other and fed off of one another. I'm so proud of David and our coaching staff.Â
"David didn't flinch during the competition. I've never seen him with a smile that big before. His mom had flown out for the competition and it only added to the special moment. It was truly unbelievable."
