Freshman Duo Caps Strong Nationals Debut, Builds Momentum for Carroll Track & Field

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Carroll University freshmen Jenna Weis and Brian Smith closed out impressive 2026 campaigns this week at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, continuing a breakout year that also included appearances at the indoor national meet.

Weis opened competition for the Pioneers on Thursday in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.60 meters (11-9 ¾) to tie for 21st overall in a deep national field. Competing on the sport's biggest stage for the second time this year, the freshman showed poise against experienced competition, gaining valuable championship experience that will serve as a strong foundation moving forward.

Smith followed on Friday in the men's 400-meter prelims, delivering one of the strongest performances of his young career. The freshman clocked a time of 47.37, narrowly missing a qualifying spot in the finals while posting his second-fastest outdoor time of the season. Competing in a highly competitive field, Smith finished just outside the top eight required to advance, closing a standout race that signals his continued rise on the national level.

Both student-athletes conclude the year having competed at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, a notable accomplishment for first-year competitors. Their performances throughout the season—culminating in strong showings on the national stage—position the Pioneers well heading into 2027, as both Weis and Smith look to build on their early success and continue Carroll's momentum at the championship level.
