NEW ORLEANS, Lou. – Carroll University freshman Brian Smith added another milestone to his standout debut season, earning USTFCCCA Second-Team All-America honors following his performance at the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Smith secured All-America status in the 400-meter dash after finishing 11th overall in the national field. According to USTFCCCA criteria, Second-Team All-America recognition is awarded to athletes who place 9th through 16th in individual events at the NCAA Championships, with preliminary round results determining placement when fewer than 12 advance to finals.
Competing in Friday's preliminaries, Smith delivered one of the top races of his young career, clocking a time of 47.37. The mark narrowly missed qualifying for the eight-person final while standing as his second-fastest outdoor performance of the season. In a highly competitive national field, the freshman was just fractions of a second shy of advancing, underscoring his emergence as one of the top quarter-milers in Division III.
Smith's All-America honor caps a remarkable first year at the collegiate level, as he also qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships earlier this season. Competing on both national stages as a freshman, Smith has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of Carroll's track and field program.
With national experience already under his belt and All-America status secured, Smith's trajectory points toward even greater success ahead, positioning him as a key contributor as the Pioneers look to build momentum into next season.
