Pios earn third straight conference sweep

Carroll wins fifth straight with 4-1 road victory over Elmhurst in finale of doubleheader

ELMHURST, Ill. - Junior left fielder Rosalie Jrolf (Dousman, Wis.) went 2-for-3 and drove in a run as the Carroll University softball team defeated Elmhurst College 4-1 in the finale of a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at San Creek Park on Saturday afternoon.
It was the third consecutive conference sweep for Carroll, which won its fifth straight game to improve to 6-2 in the highly contested league standings and 19-10 overall.
The Pioneers - who have won nine of their last 10 games - are currently in sole possession of third place with four conference doubleheaders remaining on the regular-season schedule including fifth-place Wheaton (6-4) on April 20, fourth-place Carthage (4-2) on April 23, sixth-place Millikin (4-6) on April 27 and first-place No. 4-ranked Illinois Wesleyan (6-0) on April 28.
Three of the four doubleheaders will be at home on Carroll's own Kilgour Field.
The Pioneers, who finished with eight hits, trailed 1-0 but responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to ensure a victory.
Freshman designated hitter Katelyn Schneider (Sussex, Wis.) had a game-tying RBI bunt single and sophomore third baseman Allyssa Demma (Orland Park, Ill.) scored as the result of a wild pitch in the momentum-shifting fourth.
Carroll extended the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI double to left-center field by Jrolf and senior second baseman Maggie Erdman (Jefferson, Wis.) drove in the final run on a fielder's choice.
Junior right-hander Lexy Kemnitzer (McFarland, Wis.) was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk to earn a complete-game victory.
Kemnitzer, who improved to 7-0 overall, currently has a 3.32 earned run average with 53 strikeouts through 57 innings.
Freshman second baseman Mia Tran had an RBI double to center field in the top of the fourth for Elmhurst, which dropped to 1-7 in conference and 7-16 overall.
