ELMHURST, Ill. - Carroll University (12-19, 4-11 CCIW) rode a solid pitching performance from Andrew Stone and a seven run sixth inning to the 14-12 win on Saturday afternoon at Elmhurst College.
Elmhurst would take the early lead with an unearned run in the first and another run in the second for the 2-0 advantage.
The Pioneers would take the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Brad Vosters would get the Pios on the board, reaching on a one-out walk, stealing second and advancing to third on the throw. Vosters would then score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 2-1. Two more walks and a hit batter would load the bases for Adam Baade who would draw the fourth walk of the inning to tie the game at two. Dylan Callahan would promptly single up the middle to score a pair of runs and give Carroll the 4-2 lead.
The Pios would add another run in the fifth on a Trevor Benz sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-2, but Elmhurst would answer with a single tally to cut the lead to 5-3 after five innings.
The top of the sixth started out slow for the Pioneers. The inning started with a pop out and single by Baade. Baade however would be caught stealing to empty the bases with two out. Three walks and four hits later, the big hit a bases loaded double by Ethan Fleigle, and the Pios would hold a 12-3 advantage.
Andrew Stone (2-1) would work a solid six innings, striking out 4 and surrendering just one earned. Stone would leave after six innings with a 12-3 lead.
Benz would drive in his second run of the game, scoring Alex Kermendy in the top of the seventh to extend the Pioneer lead to 13-3.
Elmhurst would pick up a run in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going at 13-4.
Carroll would again push the lead to ten as Kermendy would single home Baade making it 14-4.
Elmhurst would keep working offensively, picking up a pair of runs in the eighth inning to cut the Pio lead to 14-6.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, Carroll took the field needing just three outs to secure the win with an eight run lead. However, it became interesting as Elmhurst cut the lead to 14-12 with runners at the corners, before Logan Johnson would record the final out on a ground ball to shortstop to seal the Pio win.
Carroll will return home as they host North Park University at 6pm on Wednesday at Frame Park.
