Difficult season comes to an end

Schultz scores four goals to lead Pios in home-field season finale versus conference champion Illinois Wesleyan

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Junior attackman Jeff Schultz (Franklin, Wis.) contributed an individual season-high four goals with an assist, fielded three groundballs, won two faceoffs and caused a turnover as the Carroll University men's lacrosse team lost to high-powered league champion Illinois Wesleyan University 28-9 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the season finale for Carroll, which finished the season 0-6 in the conference standings and 0-15 overall. 
The Pioneers - who generated a season-high conference goal total - trailed 5-4 at the end of the character-building opening quarter but were outscored 9-1 in what became a momentum-shifting second quarter.
Schultz was the team's leading scoring threat this season with 24 goals and eight assists in starting 13 of 15 games.
Sophomore attackman Airik Ranjo (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a hat trick and an assist, three groundballs and caused a turnover for Carroll, which was outshot 105-16 - including a 66-12 shot-on-goal margin. Freshman midfielder Danny McGee (Rockford, Ill.) added two goals with senior attackman Paul Kerchberger (Deer Park, Ill.), junior midfielder Christopher Bechtel (Sammamish, Wash.) and sophomore midfielder Michael Peters (Chicago, Ill.) each collecting an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Abe Escarda (Sammamish, Wash.) registered a season-high 38 saves with two assists in playing the entire 60 minutes.
Senior midfielder Will Rossi scored a game-high five goals for Illinois Wesleyan, which improved to 6-0 in conference and 14-1 overall. Junior midfielder Ty Collins, freshman attackman Scott Allgood and freshman attackman Rick Smith each added a hat trick for the Titans, who entered the contest hovering just out of the top 20 and clinched the regular-season title outright.
