BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carroll University softball team lost to No. 6-ranked league champion Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 in the opening game of a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
It was the fourth consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 7-6 in the league standings and 22-14 overall.
The twinbill was originally scheduled to be played at Carroll's Kilgour Field but was relocated to Bloomington, Ill. because of Saturday's snowstorm.
Illinois Wesleyan, which improved to 13-0 in conference and 28-6 overall, collected the winning run in the top of the first inning as senior center fielder Jillian Runyon scored on an error.
Junior second baseman Shelby Fulk delivered an RBI bunt single in the third and freshman first baseman Colleen Palczynski added a run-scoring sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth for the Titans, who won their eighth straight and registered their 13th shutout victory of the season.
Junior right-hander Ally Wiegand, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-American last year, pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn a complete game victory.
Wiegand, who improved to 17-2 overall, had a no-hitter going through 6 1/3 innings before yielding a one-out double to left field by Carroll freshman center fielder
Sierra Grubor (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Junior right-hander
Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks through three complete innings.
