Pios Drop Both Ends of Double-Header Late

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (15-25, 7-17 CCIW) wrapped up their 2019 season dropping a pair of close games to Augustana College (26-13-1, 15-9 CCIW) by final scores of 8-7 and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The opener started well as Carroll would post five runs in the first inning.  A Matt Putman RBI double to right-field would open the scoring and a Sam Harmeyer RBI single would give the Pios the 5-1 lead after the first.

Augustana would get a run on a solo homerun in the fourth and tie the game on a three-run homer in the fifth.  A pair of runs in the top of the eighth would allow the Vikings to take the 7-5 lead.

Carroll would cut the deficit to just one as Harmeyer tripled and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Kolb to make it a 7-6 game heading to the ninth inning.

Another solo homerun to start the top of the ninth would push the Auggie lead back to 8-6 heading to the last half inning.

The Pioneers would rally in the ninth. Brad Vosters would double to left-center to open the inning and Matt Putman would single to put runners at the corners with no outs.  The next batter would strike out for the first out of the inning before Alex Kermendy would drive home Vosters on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 8-7 with the tying run at first.  Pinch hitter Danny Glampe would pop-out to second and the rally would fall short in game one.

Augustana would race out to the early 2-0 lead in game two as the lead-off batter would single and the second hitter of the game would homer to right field to start the early scoring.

From that point, the game would be a pitchers dual as the score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Josh Kolb and Ethan Fleigle would both single to start the inning.  Vosters would advance both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Kolb would score on a Putman ground out to cut the deficit to 2-1.  The next batter, Dylan Callahan, would drive a ball over the left field fence for his eighth long ball of the year giving the Pios the 3-2 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning, Auggie would retake the lead on four consecutive one-out singles and a squeeze play leading to three runs and a 5-3 Viking lead.

Carroll would single from Putman with one out in the bottom of the eighth and Callahan would follow with a deep fly ball to right-center that was caught on the warning track allowing the Vikings to get out of the eighth with no damage done.  Augustana would record a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to seal the double-header sweep.
