Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University Women's Tennis team opened play at home and on the road to start their 2019-2020 season.
Overall, Maya Gedtke went 1-1 in doubles and 2-0 in single matches today. Her teammate Ashley LaBelle also finished the day 2-0 in single matches.
In their first match against MSOE, the women were victorious by the score of 6-3. Carolyn Merkatoris & Gedtke (8-3) and Jacqueline Lillwitz & Kelly Messina (8-7
9) won their double matches. In singles play, LaBelle (6-0, 6-1), Gedtke (6-2, 6-2), Clare Veranth (6-4, 6-4), and Erin Vertz (6-2, 6-1) won their matches, all in just two sets.
For the second match at home, the Pioneers excelled against Alverno, winning the match 9-0. The doubles shined, with Rachel Papp & Brianna Japkowksi (8-0), Allison Krusa & Jenna Bocek (8-0), and Vanessa Ignatew & Audrey Schleich (8-1) winning in a demanding fashion. Lora Leach (6-3, 6-0), Krusa (6-1, 6-1), Bocek (6-0, 6-0), Ignatew (6-1, 6-0), Papp (6-0, 6-0), and Japkowski (6-0, 6-1) all added in singles wins in two sets.
In the away match, the pair of Grace Krueger and Ashley LaBelle pulled off an 8-5 set against Concordia's top double. In single play, Krueger (
77-6
4, 6-2), LaBelle (6-2-, 6-1), and Gedtke (
77-6
1 , 6-4) ) picked up wins. The team were edged out by Concordia in the end, falling 4-5.
The Pioneers will travel to North Central College on Wednesday, Sep. 4 to open CCIW play.
