Offense struggles in CCIW opener

Four-game winning streak ends as Carroll falls to in-state rival Carthage

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University men's soccer team lost to in-state rival and defending league tournament champion Carthage College 3-0 in a tough, physical College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at Schneider Stadium on Saturday night.
It was the first shutout loss of the season for Carroll, which entered the contest riding the momentum of a four-game winning streak but dropped to 5-3 overall.
Despite outshooting Carthage by a statement-making 15-9 margin and maintaining a 4-3 shot-on-goal advantage, the Pioneers struggled to finish on several potential momentum-shifting shots throughout the tenacious, fast-paced battle.
Carthage, which improved to 5-5 overall, scored two unanswered goals over the course of the opening 45 minutes - including what proved to the game-winning unassisted shot by senior forward Jerry Patino at the 9:35 mark.
Patino converted a penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute for the Red Men, who attempted five corner kicks. The final goal came as senior midfielder Jeff Montemayor finished on a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Niko Mavrogiannis registered four saves to preserve a shutout.
Senior defender Issey Valadez (Milwaukee, Wis.), senior midfielder Gabriel Mundo (Highwood, Ill.), freshman midfielder/defender Ryan Coughlin (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman midfielder/forward Parker Nimmer (De Pere, Wis.) each had a shot-on-goal for Carroll.
Senior goalkeeper Matthias Holm (Marshfield, Wis.) had three saves in playing the entire 90 minutes.
"Tonight, some calls didn't go our way but soccer is a game of opportunities, we had them in the first 15 minutes and didn't convert," said Carroll head coach Derek Marie, a former standout center midfielder for the Pioneers in his second year at the helm. "Good teams will capitalize on the situation and take advantage of the situation if you don't finish. That's what happened this time.
"While it hurts to lose 3-0 to the conference champions, there's a lot to grow from in that we finally played a comparable team that exposed some of our weaknesses. From a learning standpoint, it showed our strengths and the deficiencies in our game. At one point, I looked and there were seven freshmen on the field which is exciting for the future. That said, we were going hard after the victory but the third goal just seemed to take the wind out of our sails because we were playing too much on their half of the field. We played a good game against a good team so the final score is a little deceiving and doesn't show what we really accomplished. We'll just make the necessary adjustments and take it from there Wednesday. Even though it wasn't the end result that we wanted, we'll live to play another day."
