Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late-game struggles continue for Pioneers

Penny scores season-high 22 points as determined effort falls short in CCIW road loss to Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. - The Carroll University men's basketball team lost to Wheaton College 58-54 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at King Arena on Wednesday night.
It was the fifth consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 2-6 in the highly competitive league standings and 9-8 overall.
Three of the Pioneers' five losses during the frustrating stretch have come by four points or less.
As the game remained tied 52-52 with 2:43 remaining, Wheaton answered with what proved to be a decisive 6-2 run to pull away - including two clutch free throws with four seconds left.
Senior guard Nick Penny, a second-team all-conference selection last season who is averaging a team-leading 14.5 points per game, contributed a season-high 22 points including nine field goals, 3 of 4 free throws and a 3-point basket in playing 39 minutes for the Pioneers.
The low-scoring, physical battle consisted of five lead changes and six ties.
Senior forward Charlie Soule chipped in 10 points with 4 of 8 free throws and five rebounds for Carroll, which made 10 of 16 free throws, only two 3-pointers and shot 42.9 percent from field-goal range in the neck-and-neck battle of evenly matched programs.
Senior forward Kale Maupin and sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams each followed with seven points while junior guard Ryan Clarey added six points and a team-best five assists for the Pioneers, who led 20-9 with 9:49 remaining in what appeared to be a confidence-building first half but gradually lost momentum and trailed 34-32 at the intermission.
The Pioneers, who made a statement by scoring 28 points in the paint versus the tall Wheaton lineup, were outrebounded 36-24 - including a key 27-19 margin on the defensive glass.
Tyson Cruickshank and Nyameye Adom each finished with a team-high 22 points for Wheaton, which improved to 5-3 in conference and 11-6 overall. Luke Anthony and Gavin Hawkins each had five points for the Thunder, who converted eight 3-pointers, 12 of 21 free throws and shot 46.3 percent from the field.
