Kenosha, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team fell on the road to the Carthage College Lady Reds, 74-57. Sophomore forward
Kayla Stefka scored a team high 14 points off the bench on 6-12 shooting from the floor and six rebounds. She was joined by
Alyssa Cruz with 12 points and 5 assists.
The Pioneers, (5-8, 1-4 CCIW) were unable to stop Carthage's offensive attack. The Lady Reds shot 55.6% from the floor and 5.71% from behind the three point line. The Pios managed to shoot 40%, but only went 27% from behind the arc. After leading by three points at the end of the first quarter, the women couldn't hold on to the momentum, and were outscored 24-10 in the second quarter. The Pios were kept good control of the ball, turning the ball over only 11 times, a season low.
Both teams traded blows to start the game, with sophomore
Theresa Wichser (6 pts) kicking things off for the Pioneers with a three.
Katie Evans (6 pts) and Cruz added threes' of their own to take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter. Cruz hit another three point basket midway through the second before Carthage took off on a 14-2 run to finish out the half.
Evans hit another three to try to bring back some Pioneer momentum, but the Lady Reds wouldn't budge, hitting 7-13 shots in the quarter.
Megan Madsen cut the lead to nine with a layup, but Carthage took off on another 11-4 run. The Lady Reds led by as much as 20 before head coach
Lindsay Schultz emptied her bench with 42 seconds left in the contest.
The women look to shift their focus to this weekend, when they travel to Naperville, Ill. to take on North Central College.
