Cold second-half shooting derails Pioneers

Carroll falls to Illinois Wesleyan in disheartening CCIW road loss

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior forward Kale Maupin finished with nine points, four rebounds, one assist and a steal as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to Illinois Wesleyan 88-44 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at the Shirk Center on Saturday afternoon.
It was a season-low single-game point total and eighth consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 2-9 in the league standings and 9-11 overall.
The Pioneers trailed 36-27 at the intermission but were outscored 52-17 in what became a decisive second half - including 11 unanswered points over a momentum-shifting five minute stretch.
Senior forward Charlie Soule contributed eight points, a team-high six rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot for Carroll, which converted just three baskets from 3-point range, 1 of 3 free throws and shot 36.4 percent (20 of 55) from field-goal range. Junior point guard Ryan Clarey chipped in eight points, a team-best four assists, two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.
The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 36-29 on a mid-range jump shot in the paint by Clarey with 19:36 remaining but couldn't get any closer.
Senior guard Nick Penny, freshman guard Ethan Balinao and freshman guard Seb Lees each added four points for the Pioneers, who generated 10 assists but were outrebounded 41-24 and committed an uncharacteristic 18 turnovers.
Freshman guard Luke Yoder scored a game-high 19 points with two 3-pointers, three rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Illinois Wesleyan, which entered the contest riding the momentum of a 77-71 home-court victory over No. 13-ranked North Central College on Jan. 29, won its second straight and improved to 7-3 in conference and 13-6 overall. Sophomore forward Matthew Leritz followed with 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and an assist with junior guard Colin Cheaney adding 10 points for the Titans, who made 10 3-pointers, 12 of 16 free throws and shot 54.1 percent from the field.
