Pioneers fall to No. 23 Elmhurst

Maupin, Williams, Soule star for Carroll in CCIW road battle that featured 10 lead changes and 13 ties

ELMHURST, Ill. - Senior forward Kale Maupin finished with a game-high 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to No. 23-ranked Elmhurst College 62-59 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin showdown at R.A. Faganel Hall on Wednesday night.
It was the second consecutive loss to a nationally-ranked conference opponent for Carroll, which dropped to 4-11 in the league standings and 11-13 overall.
Eight of the Pioneers' conference losses have come by four points or less this season.
The neck-and-neck battle between fierce league rivals, which featured 10 lead changes and 13 ties, remained tied 29-29 at the intermission.
Elmhurst responded by outscoring Carroll 33-30 over the course of the final 20 minutes.
Tied 48-48 with 4:41 remaining, Elmhurst answered by scoring five straight points over a critical one-minute stretch - ignited by a momentum-shifting 3-pointer from the right, top portion of the perimeter by senior forward Derek Dotlich.
Carroll trimmed the deficit to three points three times within the final three minutes but couldn't complete the comeback, including a jump shot by Maupin to cut the lead to 53-50 with 2:44 left.
Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams followed with 12 points, six rebounds and a steal for the Pioneers, who made 7 of 10 free throws, four baskets from 3-point range and shot 42.9 percent from field-goal range. Senior forward Charlie Soule contributed 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Junior guard Ryan Clarey chipped in nine points, three assists, one blocked shot and a steal for Carroll, which forced 18 turnovers, scored 38 points in the paint but was outrebounded by a key 42-29 margin. Junior guard/forward Tarren Hall added eight points with two 3-pointers, five rebounds, two steals and an assist.
The Pioneers were without the services of injured second-team all-conference sharp-shooting guard Nick Penny, the team's leading scorer this season with 14.3 points per game.
Junior guard Dominic Genco scored a team-high 14 points and junior guard Jake Rhode had 11 points for Elmhurst, which improved to 11-5 in conference and 20-5 overall. Junior forward/center Lavon Thomas finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and an assist with Dotlich adding eight points for the Bluejays, who converted four 3-pointers, 14 of 17 free throws and shot 40 percent from the field.
