Carroll splits with UW-Superior in doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium

Baker hits grand slam in fifth as Pioneers fall 10-7 in finale

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Sophomore left fielder Justin Baker hit a grand slam to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University baseball team lost to the University of Wisconsin-Superior 10-7 in the finale of a nonconference doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday evening.
It was the first home run of the early season for Carroll, which suffered its fourth non-league road loss and dropped to 1-4 overall.
Carroll collected the opening run of the contest in the bottom of the first on an RBI sacrifice flyout by sophomore center fielder Josh Kolb.
UW-Superior, which improved to 1-1 overall, answered with two runs in the top of the third, six runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.
Baker's homer - the second of his career - trimmed the deficit to 9-5  in the fifth for Carroll, which finished with seven hits but stranded 10 runners on base in the out-of-state showdown.
UW-Superior added a run in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 10-5 and help ensure the victory.
Carroll's final two runs came in the seventh as sophomore center fielder Matt Pestel scored from third following a bases-loaded hit batsman and junior first baseman Mitchell Massino scored on a fielder's choice.
Pestel went 2-for-2 and scored two runs for the Pioneers, who didn't commit an error. Senior right fielder Dylan Callahan, junior second baseman Danny Glampe, sophomore designated hitter Benton Holly and sophomore catcher Trevor Benz each added a hit.
Freshman right-hander Carter Ruegsegger, who was making his first collegiate start for the Pioneers, allowed two earned runs on six hits through three complete innings in taking the loss. Senior Brenden Charette, junior Dawson Kiphart, sophomore Michael Costanzo, freshman Bryce Spaulding and freshman Scotty Starovich also saw action on the mound.
