O'Fallon, Ill. – The Carroll University softball team advanced to 3-0 after the first game of the double header against Wash U, by a score of 5-0.
Amanda Osterhus picked up her second win in two days after striking out 10, and
Claudia Spencer continued to have the hot bat with another RBI triple today.
Emily Green started her second game of the season and collected two hits including a double. Green also was the culprit of the team's only error of the contest. The Bears of Wash U were held to only four hits as the Pioneers smacked seven. Only one Pioneer struck out, but six were left on base and were unable to cash in extra runs.
Osterhus surrendered her first hit of the season in the bottom of the first inning, but proceeded to retire the next nine batters in a row. After six strong,
Grace Bradley stepped in the circle to finish up the last inning.
Green's leadoff double kicked off a spark of offense for the Pios.
Megan Funk laid down a SAC bunt, then
Sierra Grubor advanced to first on a fielding error and Green was able to make it around the bases.
In the fourth,
Mathena Higgins took advantage of two wild pitches and advanced all the way to third off her walk. Another wild pitched walked
Allyssa Demma, and Higgins snuck in to score. Funk laid down her second SAC bunt to score Demma.
Spencer's triple scored
Lyndsey Rost from first, and another throwing error caused Higgins to reach first while Spencer scored in the fifth inning.
The Pios take on Wash U once more this afternoon.
