Pios struggle to maintain early momentum in loss

Vosters, Massino, Callahan each finish with three hits to power 13-hit offensive attack; Carroll falls to 2-2 on Florida trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Carroll University baseball team scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning but struggled to maintain the momentum as it lost to Haverford College 18-4 in a sunny, warm fourth game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Player Development Complex on Thursday morning.
The nonconference setback snapped a string of back-to-back victories for Carroll, which dropped to 2-2 on the Florida spring break trip and 3-6 overall.
Carroll's early-inning scoring surge included an RBI single by senior second baseman Ethan Fleigle, a run-scoring double to left field by junior first baseman Mitchell Massino, an RBI single to left field from sophomore center fielder Josh Kolb and a two-out RBI fielder's choice groundout by sophomore designated hitter Justin Baker.
Haverford responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and followed with six runs in the fourth to ensure a victory.
Massino went 3-for-4 and scored a run to help power a season-high 13-hit attack for the Pioneers, highlighted by three extra-base hits. Senior right fielder Dylan Callahan and junior shortstop Brad Vosters each collected three hits with Kolb adding two hits.
Freshman right-hander Carter Ruegsegger allowed five earned runs with one strikeout and one walk through 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss.
Sophomore right-hander Eric Kopczynski yielded four earned runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts and two walks through six innings to earn the victory for Haverford, which pounded out 18 hits and improved to 5-4 overall.
