Pioneers win extra-inning thriller

Henry drives in winning run in bottom of the 10th in 4-3 victory over Lakeland

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Evan Henry, a freshman catcher from Twin Lakes, Wis., drove in the winning run on a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Carroll University baseball team defeated Lakeland University 4-3 to conclude its fifth game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Player Development Complex on Friday morning.
It was the first extra-inning victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 3-2 on the Florida spring break trip and 4-6 overall.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, sophomore center fielder Josh Kolb reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on an intentional walk to junior right fielder Alec Honickel and scored the game-winner on Henry's dramatic, pressure-packed hit.
The steadily improving Pioneers have won three of their last four games.
Carroll collected the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double down the left-field line by sophomore left fielder Justin Baker.
Lakeland tied the game with a single run in the sixth and followed with two runs in the top of the eighth to claim a 3-1 lead.
Honickel delivered a clutch, run-scoring triple in the bottom of the eighth to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Sophomore pinch runner Josh Nitch scored from third as the result of a wild pitch with one out in the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings.
Baker and senior second baseman Ethan Fleigle each collected two hits for Carroll, which pounded out 12 hits and has combined for 25 hits over the course of its last two games.
Senior right-hander Brenden Charette, making his first start of the season, pitched a two-hit shut-out through 4 2/3 innings.
Sophomore right-hander Jake Nitch worked the final two innings, yielding no runs on one hit with a strikeout and two walks to earn the victory for the Pioneers.
