Pioneers wrap-up season with final game of Florida trip

NCAA's decision to cancel the spring athletic season due to COVID-19 officially goes into effect March 16th

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Carroll University baseball team lost to Rockford University 7-3 in its season-ending sixth game of the 30th annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Player Development Complex on Saturday morning.
It was the final game of the abbreviated 2020 campaign following the NCAA's decision to cancel the remainder of the spring athletic season as the result of ongoing developments due to COVID-19. The ruling offically goes into effect March 16th.
Carroll completed its Florida spring break trip with a 3-3 record and finished the year 4-7 overall.
The Pioneers collected the first two runs of the contest in the top of the fourth inning as junior left fielder Alec Honickel delivered a one-out RBI double down the left-field line and sophomore catcher Trevor Benz followed with a run-scoring sacrifice flyout to left field.
Rockford answered with four runs on five hits in what proved to be a decisive bottom of the seventh and added three runs in the eighth.
Carroll's final run came in the ninth as sophomore pinch runner Jake Nitch scored as the result of a two-out bases-loaded walk.
Senior right fielder Dylan Callahan went 3-for-4 and scored a run to power a nine-hit offensive attack for Carroll, which stranded 12 runners on base. Junior third baseman Danny Glampe contributed two hits with junior shortstop Brad Vosters and junior first baseman Mitchell Massino each adding a hit.
Senior right-hander Seth Smith allowed four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks through 6 2/3 innings in taking the loss.
