Late rally not enough as Carroll falls in opener of Florida trip

Pioneers fall to Otterbein 12-4 in first game of the 30th annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Senior right fielder Dylan Callahan went 2-for-4 with two doubles and scored a run as the Carroll University baseball team lost to Otterbein University 12-4 in its opening game of the 30th annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Player Development Complex on Sunday morning.
It was the first nonconference matchup of a six-game seven-day Spring Break trip to Florida for Carroll, which dropped to 1-5 overall.
The Pioneers, who finished with six hits and stranded five runners on base, collected all four of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Callahan scored as the result of a one-out bases-loaded walk, senior second baseman Ethan Fleigle followed with a two-run double to left center field and junior shortstop Brad Vosters added an RBI sacrifice flyout.
Senior right-hander Seth Smith pitched four complete innings, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with five walks and a strikeout in taking the loss.
Sophomore left-hander Griffin Klein pitched two innings with sophomore right-hander Jake Nitch, sophomore right-hander Michael Costanzo and junior right-hander Dawson Kiphart each contributing one inning - combining for five earned runs with two strikeouts and four walks.
Sophomore center fieder Ryan Mitchell went 3-for-5 with a double and drove in a run to power a 16-hit attack for Otterbein, which won its fourth straight to improve to 7-5 overall.
Sophomore right-hander Travis Engard was the winning pitcher, yielding four earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks through 6 1/3 innings.
