Pioneers open Florida trip with victory

Karls scores career-high six goals as Carroll defeats SUNY Canton in first round of Spring Fling Games

ENGELWOOD, Fla. - Junior midfielder Courtenay Karls finished with a career-high six goals and an assist to lead the Carroll University women's lacrosse team to a 15-12 victory over SUNY Canton in the opening round of the Spring Fling Games at Ann Dever Memorial Park on Monday morning.
It was the first game of the Florida spring break trip for Carroll, which won its fourth straight to improve to 4-1 overall on the early season.
The Pioneers trailed 7-4 at the intermission but showcased their resilience and determination by outscoring SUNY Canton 11-5 in the second half - including three critical goals over a four-minute stretch.
Freshman attacker Katrina Hardin scored what proved to be the winning goal on an unassisted shot to extend the lead to 13-11 with 7:54 remaining.
Junior midfielder Michaela Johnson followed with three goals and team-high three assists for Carroll, which outshot SUNY Canton 34-23 - maintaining a 24-18 shot-on-goal advantage.
Hardin and junior attacker/midfielder Alyssa Scharff each contributed two goals with senior attacker Natasha Niles and freshman attacker Jenna May each adding one goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Alicia Van Dale registered six saves in playing the entire 60 minutes for the Pioneers.
It was a meaningful victory for Carroll head coach Michael Hodge, a former assistant coach at SUNY Canton in 2013 under the guidance of veteran coach Dave Bradman.
Erin Parks scored a team-high four goals for SUNY Canton, which dropped to 0-3 overall.
