Men’s Soccer Wins First CCIW Game This Season

Pios rip off over 20 shots

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team played another classic at Schneider Stadium, defeating Millikin University 2-1 on Saturday night at Schneider Stadium. Zane Walters scored the game-winner for Carroll in the 83rd minute.

The Pioneers (8-4-1, 1-2-1 CCIW) win their first CCIW game since 2018 in a convincing fashion, putting up 28 shots with eight on goal, while holding Millikin to just four shots and three on goal. Carroll held the Big Blue to just the one shot and goal in the second half while taking 15 of their own. Josh Gonzaga got open often, taking seven shots while three were on net. Walters, who came in off the bench, followed with three. Carroll held the ball for 59% of the game.

A slow first half ended in a 0-0 draw for both teams. Five of Carroll's 13 shots had chances of going in but were saved by the Big Blue Keeper. Carroll's second half got interesting a bit quicker, as a handball in Millikin's goal box gave Anthony Buffington his third penalty kick goal of the season. Millikin responded five minutes later, after forcing a corner. The kick plus two headers found the Carroll nylon to equalize the contest.

The Big Blue and Carroll made substitutions late in the second half to put their best lineups on the field for a chance to win. After returning to the field after an injury, Ricky Perez placed a ball right in front of Walters, who took one bounce off his chest and put it in the back of the net with his left foot for the game-winner in the 83rd minute.

The Pioneers travel to in-state rival Carthage College for their next conference matchup. The Firebirds have taken five straight from the Pioneers.
