ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Carroll University football team sputtered against Washington University in St. Louis, falling 12-35 on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers offense only scored one touchdown all game, while kicking two field goals.
Josh Hill led the receiving corps with six catches for 65 yards.
Steven Lazaris picked up nine tackles, 1.5 TFL, and a fumble recovery.
The Pioneers (4-4, 3-4 CCIW) only created 280 yards of total offense, and picked up 19 first downs. The passing game contributed 209 of those yards, split 176 to
Michael Johnson, and 33 to
John Taylor. The Pios turned the ball over a season-high four times, with two interceptions and two fumbles. The Carroll defense held strong in the first half, but couldn't keep the Bears out of the end zone three times in the second half. Carroll collected three sacks and recovered a Wash U fumble as well.
On a game-opening, 10-play Wash U drive, the Pio defense held strong at their own 10-yard line, forcing a turnover on downs on 4
th and one. Carroll was unable to go 90 yards, punting after six plays.
Wash U got on the board first with :42 seconds left in the first quarter, capitalizing on a strip-sack of Johnson. The Bears scored on their next possession to go up 14-0. With the ball in Wash U territory, Johnson took a shot deep, but the pass was intercepted on the Wash U 14 yard line.
With Wash U driving late in the second quarter,
Helios Martinez picked up his 2.5 sack of the season and forced a fumble to give Carroll the ball back with 2:36 left in the half.
Jacob Laurent put one through the uprights as time expired to get Carroll on the board from 24-yards out.
Carroll's second-half opening drive went 16-plays, 74 yards while eating up 6:03 of clock. Johnson and the Pios worked the ball down to the Wash U one-yard line, but the Bears forced a fumble on the QB keeper just outside the end zone. Wash U went 99-yards nine plays later to take a 21-3 lead.

rd and one, Johnson hit
Keon Miller for 43 yards downfield, which led to Johnson's rushing touchdown. Johnson left the game with an injury after the score, and Taylor failed to convert the 2-pt try.
With the Bears up 28-9, Carroll went 57 yards on 11 plays to give Laurent another field goal from 20-yards out. The Pioneers blocked a 33-yard field goal on the next drive, but Taylor turned it over a play later on a 14-yard pick-six.
Carroll returns to Schneider Stadium for its final home game of the season and senior day against the Carthage Firebirds on Saturday, November 6.
