WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team fell for the first time at Schneider Stadium on Wednesday night. The Pioneers dropped a non-conference matchup with the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater by a score of 2-3.
Ryan Coughlin led with a goal on two shots on target.
The Pioneers (7-2-1, 0-0-1 CCIW) fall for just the second time this season. The Pioneers outscored the Warhawks 2-1 in the second half, all with less than 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Carroll was outshot by the Warhawks 3-6 in the first half but stormed back with six more shots in the second. Junior goalkeeper
Tyler Hanson recorded a season-high six saves tonight, on 13 shots faced.
The Warhawks took advantage of a blunder by Carroll in the first 14 minutes of the game, scoring a goal inside the box on a ball that was failed to be cleared.
Ethan Pequignot responded with a shot, but it sailed wide right. A second UWW Goal came in the 19
th minute, beating a Pio defender down the left side. Carroll struggled to get possession back late in the first half, holding the ball just 47% in the first 45 minutes.
The Pioneers came out in the second half with a new mindset and began taking shots, including one from
Parker Nimmer in the 52
nd minute. Coughlin's first shot on goal attempt was saved by the Warhawks' senior keeper in the 61
st minute. As time began to dwindle, a free-kick attempt was given to the Pioneers. A ball off the right foot of
Anthony Buffington fell right in place for an
Adrian Komperda header that found the back of the net in the 79
th minute. The Warhawks came right back, and with a penalty kick, and took a 3-1 advantage with less than 10 minutes to play. A UWW handball gave Carroll their own penalty kick opportunity, and Coughlin finished in the top left corner to bring the match within one. The Pioneers had the ball in UWW's box with less than 20 seconds on the clock but were unable to get a shot off in time.
Carroll will resume its CCIW schedule on Saturday, as they battle Elmhurst in a road matchup. The Pioneers are 2-2 against the Bluejays since rejoining the conference in 2016.
