Women’s Basketball Struggles at Elmhurst

A tough day shooting kept the score out of reach

Elmhurst, Ill. – The Carroll University women's basketball team dropped a tough game to Elmhurst University on Saturday, by a score of 51-78. Kayla Stefka led the team with 11 points, while Katie Evans hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.

The Pioneers (4-2, 4-2 CCIW) finished the Elmhurst series 2-2, losing both games on the road. The Pioneers were only able to make three shots from behind the arc (3-18, 16.7%), and finished under 35% from the field. Elmhurst had a day cleaning up the glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds and collecting 17 second-chance points to Carroll's nine. Marissa Murray (10pts, 4 reb) collected four steals out of Elmhurst's nine total turnovers.

Murray's first free-throw attempt of the game came at the 8:08 minute mark and was the only Pio point scored in the first four minutes inside an Elmhurst 6-1 run. The Bluejays worked the lead up to 13 points in the first quarter before a Lauren Soyke (2 pts, 2 reb) basket stopped the scoring streak. Theresa Wichser (4 pts, 1-3 3PM) knocked in a three with six seconds left to cut the lead to 11. Kate Christian (4 pts) and Stefka helped lead an 11-2 run in the second quarter, with help from a Stefka three-point play, cutting the lead to seven. A late run by the Bluejays brought back the lead to double digits at the end of the half.

Murray hit a jump shot three-pointer to open the second half scoring. Elmhurst ended the third quarter on an 11-3 run. Stefka started most of the scoring in the fourth quarter, bringing her total up to 11 before Elmhurst took a 30-point lead with 5:01 remaining in the game. The Pios did everything they could to cut the lead down to 27 at the end of the game.

The Pios will get a short weekend and host Carthage on Tuesday night in Van Male. Earlier this season, the Pios trounced the Carthage women's team on the road. Wichser led the way in that game with 15 points.
