WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team swept Cornell College 5-4 and 17-4 in a windy, cool nonconference doubleheader at Frame Park on Sunday afternoon.
It was the first official twin bill of the season for Carroll, which extended its winning streak to three games and remained unbeaten on its newly renovated state-of-the-art field while improving to 4-1 overall.
It's the program's best start after five games since 2017.
GAME 1
Freshman pinch-runner
Jexel Valentin scored the winning run as the result of an error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Carroll outlasted Cornell in the opener.
On the game-winning sequence, Valentin entered as a pinch-runner for junior left fielder
Justin Baker (who reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a walk to senior second baseman
Danny Glampe). Valentin then advanced to third on a walk and scored on a miscue by the Cornell second baseman.
Glampe went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Pioneers, who finished with six hits.
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by Glampe followed by run-scoring doubles from junior third baseman
Benton Holly and senior shortstop
Brad Vosters.
Senior first baseman
Mitchell Massino hit a solo home run in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-0 for Carroll, which had three extra-base hits with three stolen bases.
Cornell answered with four runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game, ultimately setting the stage for the pressure-packed final inning.
Senior left-hander
Curtis Sheahan scattered five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in pitching six shutout innings to begin the game.
Junior right-hander
Jake Nitch picked up the victory, yielding just one hit with three strikeouts and no walks in working the final 1 1/3 innings.
Caleb Sass went 3-for-5 for Cornell, which finished with 10 hits.
GAME 2
Senior right fielder
Alec Honickel went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the Pioneers defeated Cornell in seven innings to cap the twin bill.
The victory took on historical significance as it was the most runs generated by a Carroll team since April 25, 2018 (a 21-3 nonconference road victory over Edgewood College).
Carroll scored 12 runs on six hits and took advantage of an error in what proved to be a decisive bottom of the third inning to erase an early two-run deficit.
Junior third baseman
Benton Holly went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs to help fuel an efficient 11-hit offensive attack for the Pioneers, who finished with five doubles. Senior designated hitter
Dylan Callahan, Massino, Glampe and Baker each added a hit and drove in two runs.
Callahan and Massino each delivered run-scoring singles to ignite the 12-run game-changing third for Carroll.
Callahan later scored on an error with Baker and Holly each following with a two-run double to extend the lead to 7-2. Honickel had an RBI single, Holly scored on a fielder's choice and senior shortstop
Brad Vosters scored from third as the result of a bases-loaded hit batsman.
Glampe responded with a two-run double to round out the scoring in the momentum-shifting inning.
The Pioneers collected a single run in the fourth as Vosters scored on a bases-loaded walk to increase the lead to 13-3.
Sophomore second baseman
Cole Haugh scored on an error and Honickel delivered a two-run double as Carroll added two runs in the fifth.
The Pioneers' final run came in the sixth on a sacrifice fly out by junior catcher
Clay Schult.
Sophomore left-hander
Scotty Starovich was the winning pitcher, yielding two runs on no hits with two strikeouts and one walk through the first three innings.
It was the first victory of the season for Starovich who faced 13 hitters in the contest, forcing six fly outs and one ground out in the process.
Junior right-hander
Drew McDermid worked the next three innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore southpaw
Josh Streu pitched a one-hit seventh to finish off the day.
Colin Konicek went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for Cornell, which dropped to 0-8 overall.
