Carroll struggles to maintain momentum in both games of doubleheader versus Wheaton

CAROL STREAM, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team was swept by Wheaton College in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday afternoon, losing the opener 6-4 and falling 12-8 in the finale.
Carroll, which has lost four straight games, dropped to 0-3 in the highly contested conference standings and 4-5 overall.
TJ Pfaffle went 6-for-10 with three RBIs on the day to lead the Pioneers, who combined for 22 hits, including eight doubles, in the twin bill.
Carroll won its last conference game on May 3, 2019 (a 5-1 home-field victory over Augustana College at Frame Park).

GAME 1

Dylan Callahan went 4-for-5 with two doubles and drove in a run but it wasn't enough as Carroll fell in the opener.
Carroll scored the first run of the contest in the top of the third inning on an RBI double to left-center field by Callahan.
Wheaton answered with two runs in the bottom of third to claim a 2-1 lead.
Pfaffle, who went 3-for-5, delivered a run-scoring single right field to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth.
Wheaton responded with four runs in the game-changing fifth to regain a lead.
The Pioneers' final runs came in the seventh on a two-run double down the left-field line by Justin Baker.
Nick Angus collected two hits for Carroll, which finished with 12 hits (including four doubles).
Ben Ellifson allowed five runs on eight hits with two strikouts and two walks through 4 1/3 innings in taking the loss for the Pioneers. Brett Buzzelli worked the final 3 2/3 innings, yielding one run on two hits with three strikouts and no walks.
Noah Ritchie went 2-for-4 with five RBIs for Wheaton.
Kevin Champin was the winning pitcher, yielding two runs on eight hits with five strikouts and two walks through five complete innings for the Thunder.

GAME 2

Carroll led 7-5 after six complete innings but struggled to maintain the momentum as Wheaton responded with what proved to be a decisive seven-run rally on four hits in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of five walks in the process.
The Pioneers collected their first runs of the game in the top of the first on a two-run double to left-center field by Pfaffle.
Wheaton scored a single run in the first and two in the second to claim a 3-2 lead.
Carroll answered with four runs in the fourth to erase a one-run deficit and reclaim a 6-3 lead, powered by a two-run single to center field by Angus and a two-run double to left-center field from Alec Honickel.
The Pioneers final runs came as Mitchell Massino scored as the result of an error in the fifth and Callahan added an RBI sacrifice flyout in the eighth.
Pfaffle and Honickel each had three hits with two RBIs and scored a run to help fuel a 10-hit offensive attack (including four doubles) for Carroll, which stranded eight baserunners. Massino also collected three hits in the contest.
Matthias Haggerty went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Wheaton, which improved to 2-0 in conference and 4-4 overall.
