Volleyball Still Fighting for Its First Win

Elmhurst, Ill. – The Carroll University volleyball team fell to 0-5 tonight at the hands of the No. 8 Elmhurst Bluejays in R.A. Faganel Hall, by dropping the match 0-3 (19-25, 12-25, 16-25). Sam Penzkowksi led with eight kills, Emily Konop added 13 digs, while Emily Schliesman tallied nine assists.
 
The Pioneers (0-5, 0-5 CCIW) collected a season-high 60 digs tonight, with Konop, Schliesman, and Ashley Koncecki combining for 34. The Pios put together a nine kill first set with just three errors, but fell off the last two sets, finishing with a .044 attacking percentage.  
 
Katie Jensen recorded the team's first kill to cut into a 3-4 Bluejay lead, which led to the Pios leading 6-4 after a run. From there, Elmhurst erupted for 10 unanswered points. Sofia Camacho, Lindsey Hella, and Penzkowski were able to record kills to cut the score to 10-14. Jensen notched a kill to her total with Elmhurst facing match point, but Elmhurst tallied a kill to end the set.
 
The Pioneers led early in set two, by a score of 3-1 thanks to an Ashley Konecki kill, ace, and a Jensen kill. Elmhurst went on another long run, working their lead up to 12-5. Penzkowski cut the run with a kill from Kelly Reynolds. Camacho served an ace to give the Pios nine points, but Elmhurst took off again on an 11-3 run to end the set.
 
Penzkowski recorded five of her eight kills in the third set, including one early on to tie the set at four. Camacho re-tied the set at 6 all on an assist from Schliesman, and soon after Michelle Maraist and Konecki recorded a block to take an 8-7 lead. Two straight kills from Penzkowski brought the Pios to within one, but Elmhurst finished on an 11-3 scoring run to win the match.
 
Carroll returns on Sunday March 28 with a match at Illinois Wesleyan at 1 PM. The Pioneers won the last match against the Titans 3-1 in Van Male Field House.
