WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team split with fierce, intra-state league rival Carthage College in a windy, cool College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Frame Park on Monday afternoon, winning the opener 10-6 and losing the finale 16-2.
The Pioneers, currently 2-4 in conference and 8-6 overall following the Alumni Day effort, came into the twin bill riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five.
Carroll is 7-3 overall playing on its newly renovated state-of-the-art home field this season.
Through 14 games, the Pioneers have combined for 139 hits with a statement-making 20 home runs, 36 doubles and a .526 team slugging percentage.
Game 1
Dylan Callahan went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead Carroll in the seven-inning opener.
The Pioneers erased an early one-run deficit by scoring four times on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, sparked on a two-run double by Callahan and a two-run homer by
Mitchell Massino.
Carroll followed with four runs on two hits in the third to extend the lead to 8-2 as
Trevor Benz delivered a clutch, one-out bases-loaded three-run double to center field and later scored on a fielder's choice.
Callahan's homer came in the fourth and
Josh Kolb added a solo blast in the fifth for Carroll, which finished with seven hits (including four doubles and three homers).
Sophomore right-hander
Ben Ellifson was the winning pitcher, yielding four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks through five complete innings.
Ellifson, 2-1 overall, faced 26 hitters in the steady outing inducing eight ground outs and three fly outs for the Pioneers.
Josh Streu worked the final two innings, allowing two runs on one hit to preserve a victory, forcing four fly outs and one groundout down the stretch.
Game 2
Massino went 2-for-2 with a solo homer in the second (his team-leading fifth of the season) and Kolb scored on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for Carroll in the seven-inning finale.
Kolb,
TJ Pfaffle,
Luke Blaha and
Justin Baker each added a hit for the Pioneers, who committed an uncharacteristic five errors.
Curtis Sheahan took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk through 2 2/3 innings.
Carthage finished with 17 hits.
