Men’s Basketball Wraps up Season in Quarterfinals

Elmhurst, Ill. – The Carroll University men's basketball team concluded its 2020-21 campaign in the CCIW men's basketball tournament, with a loss to the No. 3 Elmhurst Bluejays by a score of 63-89. Tarren Hall capped off his stellar season with a 24-point game with six three-pointers made. Justin Steinike finished with 18 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Pioneers (5-8, 5-7 CCIW) were stifled by the hot shooting Bluejays, who shot 59.1% from the three-point line, and 88.9% from the charity stripe. Carroll was evenly matched scoring in the paint and even collected 13 offensive rebounds. The Pioneers finished with 13 bench points, led by Paradisio Dante with six points in a season-best 15 minutes.

Tarren Hall started the game off with a three-point jump shot thanks to a Steinike assist. Steinike followed up with two free-throws to take a 5-0 lead early on. Elmhurst took the lead over at the 17:12 mark, and so started the Pioneer scoring drought. Carroll didn't score for four minutes before Steinike broke the streak and tied the game at 7 with 14:04 remaining. Hall knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to take a three-point lead before Elmhurst took it right back. The Bluejays worked the lead up to 7 with 7:19 remaining in the first half, shortly thereafter, Hall scored his 14th point of the game with a three-pointer off a turnover. Elmhurst ended the first half on an 8-2 run shooting 55.6% from the floor.

Elmhurst came out firing on all cylinders to start the fourth, firing off nine straight points before Tarren Hall hit another three-point jump shot. Hall cut the lead to 14 with 14:06 remaining with yet another basket, giving him 22. Dante was fouled going up to the basket after getting his own rebound and scored the next three Pioneer points with a free-throw and another layup with 11:07 left in the game. A 23-point Elmhurst lead forced a sixty-second timeout and a mass substitution for Carroll. Josh Hudgens came out of the timeout with a second chance layup in the paint. Ryan Mendoza (5 PTS) scored his first basket of the game with 5:43 remaining in the contest to cut the lead to 20. The Bluejays ended the game up 26 points after their 13th three-pointer fell through the net.

Tarren Hall finishes his career after averaging 18 points per game this season, the most points per game a Pioneer has averaged in a season since John Hoch in 2008-2009.
