WAUKESHA, Wis. -
Courtenay Karls contributed an individual career-high seven goals, five ground balls, four draw controls and an assist as the Carroll University women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 21-9 in a cool, rain-soaked nonconference game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Carroll improved to 8-2 overall following the emotional Senior Day performance (honoring the lasting contributions of Karls,
Courtney Wright,
Colleen Corter,
Alyssa Scharff,
Michaela Johnson and
Clara Jelacic).
The Pioneers outscored UW-River Falls 11-5 in the decisive first half, highlighted by six unanswered goals over the course of the final 11 minutes.
The dominant 60-minute effort took on added significance as it equaled the team's season-high single-game goal total.
The Pioneers have combined to outscore their opponents by a 141-61 margin in their eight victories this season, including a statement-making 92-30 advantage in the first half (highlighted by a program-record 17 goals in the nonconference home-opener versus Edgewood College on March 6, 2021).
Carroll has maintained a strong, balanced scoring attack, recording 10 or more goals in each of its eight victories.
Karls, an aggressive 5-foot-4 midfielder from Waukesha, Wis., who scored four first-half goals, was successful on three free-position shot opportunities in the contest (converting on back-to-back shots to regain a 7-5 lead with 8:38 left to power the critical run.)
Katrina Hardin followed with six goals and two assists for Carroll, which outshot UW-River Falls 33-21 (maintaining a 29-15 shot-on-goal advantage). Johnson finished with four goals, three draw controls, two caused turnovers and an assist.
Jelacic collected three goals, eight draw controls, two ground balls, two assists and a caused turnover for the Pioneers, who converted on all four of their free-shot opportunities.
Zoe Esveldt had the other goal and
Jenna May added an assist.Â
Rebecca McDaniel registered four saves in competing 51 minutes, 29 seconds to help preserve a victory for the Pioneers.
Alicia Van Dale had two saves in playing the rest of the way.
Emma Kohlbeck finished with a hat trick for UW-River Falls, which dropped to 5-2 overall.
