Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University softball team picked up two big home wins this afternoon at Kilgour Field. Carroll defeated North Park by scores of 12-0, and 10-1, both in five innings.
The Pioneers (12-10, 8-6 CCIW) were led by
Amanda Osterhus' fifth career no-hitter in game one. Osterhus tossed 5 shutout innings, walking two and striking out six on just 70 pitches.
Mathena Higgins tallied six hits in seven at bats while scoring five runs and three RBI through both games.
Bridget Rath led with six total RBI including four in game one.
Kaylee Learman moved into sole possession of third-place on the Carroll career home run list with a grand slam in game one.
Game 1
Higgins led off with a single to left field and advanced with a
Sierra Grubor SAC bunt.
Allyssa Demma doubled down the left-field line to score Higgins, and Rath added a double of her own to score Demma to take an early 2-0 lead.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second after
Maria Mundt scored
Lauren Harshbarger, Learman smacked her home run to deep left-center to extend the lead to 7-0. Harshbarger batted around but ended the inning on a ground out.
With runners on second and third, Grubor legged out an infield single to score Mundt. Learman soon walked to load the bases. A hard hit single by Rath back to the pitcher that bounced off her leg scored Higgins, but mental errors by the infield led to two more runners scoring on the play, giving Rath 3 RBI on the hit. After a pitcher change, Spencer singled to left-center that scored Rath to bring the lead to 12-0.
After allowing a leadoff walk, Osterhus struck out the next three batters to pick up her sixth win of the year.
Game 2
After switching home and away, Higgins led off with another single and was scored by Demma on a down-the-line single. Pios picked up three more in the top of the second, thanks to Higgins' RBI single, and a two-out, two-RBI double by Demma scored Higgins and Grubor.
Grace Bradley allowed the first run of the game with a fielding error by Higgins. Bradley went on to finish the game allowing only four hits, the unearned run, with two strikeouts and the win.
Mundt legged out an infield single to score
Claudia Spencer in the top of the third to extend the lead to 5-1. Pios added in four more runs in the top of the fourth that started with a leadoff walk. Spencer doubled to right field to score Rath and
Lyndsey Rost. Higgins added her third hit of the game with a double to center to score
Abby Wimmer and Mundt.
Carroll took a 10-1 lead with a SAC bunt RBI from Harshbarger scoring
Sydney Raddeman. After allowing a double in the bottom of the fifth, Bradley worked out of a jam to finish the game and pick up her fifth win of the season.
Carroll will stay at home and host the Wheaton Thunder on Thursday. Carroll has gone 2-2 against the Thunder at Kilgour Field since 2017.
