Waukesha, Wis. – the Carroll University women's tennis team won its fourth match in a row on Friday afternoon in Waukesha, hosting the Firebirds of Carthage College. Carroll came away with a decisive 6-3 win.
In doubles, Clare Vernanth and
Lora Leach pulled away with a tough battle, winning 8-5 in the number two spot.
Carolyn Merkatoris and
Francesca Grimes defeated the number three pairing handily, 8-0. In their first team up of the season,
Grace Krueger and
Maya Gaedtke dropped a tough one, falling 6-8.
In singles, Krueger faced a tough battle in the number one spot, but came away victorious in a three set win (6-2, 4-6, 1-0). Gaedtke also went to a third set after dropping the first one, winning 5-7, 6-1, 1-0. The five and six spots of Veranth and Grimes defeated their matchups in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-4, and 6-4, 6-1 respectively. Merkatoris fell in a tough way after winning the second set, losing 6-7, 7-5, 0-1.
Lora Leach in the three spot fell in straight sets by scores of 5-7, 2-6.
The Pioneers look to keep the momentum going against a formidable Augustana opponent on Sunday, April 18. The Pioneers are 0-4 in the last four years against the Vikings.
