Rock Island, Ill. – The Carroll University women's tennis team had its four game winning streak halted on Sunday by the Augustana Vikings. The Pioneers fell by a 1-8 decision.
In doubles,
Maya Gaedtke and
Carolyn Merkatoris teamed up in the one spot for the first time this season, but fell 0-8.
Rachel Papp and
Francesca Grimes teamed up in the three spot, and fought a close battle to the end but fell 7-8.
Lora Leach and
Clare Veranth dropped their match by a score of 3-8.
In singles, Gaedtke in the one spot couldn't shake her opponent, falling 0-6, 3-6. Veranth recorded the lone win today in the fifth spot, defeating her opponent in straight sets of 6-3, 7-5. Grimes fell in the first set 3-6, but made sure not to go down easy, fighting until the end with a 5-7 second set loss. Leach (1-6, 3-6), Merkatoris (0-6, 2-6), and Papp (1-6, 1-6) all fell in straight sets with their Viking opponents.
The Pioneers have one more regular season match with the North Central Cardinals on Saturday, April 24 at Jean Kilgour-Trailblazer Courts. The Pioneers are 1-3 against the Cardinals in the last four contests.
