ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -
Michaela Johnson finished with a team-high five goals, four draw controls, three ground balls and an assist as the Carroll University women's lacrosse team defeated Augustana College 17-3 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin regular-season finale at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday afternoon.
The victory took on historical significance as it clinched a share of the prestigious regular-season conference championship for Carroll, which improved to 4-1 in the highly contested league standings and 10-2 overall.
It is the first conference title in program history.
The Pioneers have combined to outscore their opponents by a statement-making 114-34 advantage in the first half (highlighted by a program-record 17 goals in the nonconference home-opener versus Edgewood College on March 6, 2021) in their 10 victories this season.
Carroll, which recently clinched its third CCIW Tournament berth, has maintained a strong, balanced scoring attack, recording 10 or more goals in each of its victories.
The Pioneers, who converted on 4 of 8 free-position shot opportunities in the contest, scored 10 unanswered goals in the dominant first half.
Courtenay Karls followed with four goals, three ground balls, two assists and a draw control in the rout for Carroll, which outshot Augie by a 36-12 margin (including 30 shots on goal).
Alyssa Scharff contributed three free-position goals and three assists with
Clara Jelacic collecting two goals, 10 draw controls and five ground balls.Â
Katrina Hardin finished with two goals and
Mina Zastrow had one goal.
Hannah Wenger and
Mina Zastrow each added an assist.
Rebecca McDaniel and
Alicia Van Dale each played a half at goalkeeper, combining for seven saves for the Pioneers.
Margaret Cecilio scored two goals for Augustana, which dropped to 0-4 in conference and 5-8 overall.
