WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team split with Elmhurst University in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Frame Park on Saturday afternoon, losing the opener 15-12 but winning the second game 7-2.
Carroll is currently 9-12 in conference and 15-14 overall following the Senior Day effort (honoring the lasting contributions of
TJ Pfaffle,
Curtis Sheahan,
Dylan Callahan,
Tyler Love,
Brad Vosters,
Danny Glampe,
Mitchell Massino,
Seth Smith,
Alec Honickel and
Dawson Kiphart).
Callahan went a combined 5-for-9 with two home runs and four RBIs for the Pioneers, who amassed 23 hits with five home runs in the twin bill.
GAME 1
Callahan and
Trevor Benz each went 3-for-5 to power a 13-hit offensive attack in the opener for Carroll, which generated six extra base hits (including three home runs and three doubles).
The Pioneers scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning on a game-tying RBI double to center field by
Mitchell Massino.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Carroll answered as
Benton Holly hit a clutch two-run homer (his team-leading eighth of the season) to left field to claim a one-run lead.
Elmhurst responded with four runs in the top of the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-3.
Carroll put together a four-run rally in the fifth to trim the deficit to 11-7 as
TJ Pfaffle scored as the result of an error, Callahan scored on a bases-loaded walk and Benz delivered a clutch two-run single.
The Pioneers tied the game with four runs in the sixth, ignited on an RBI double by Pfaffle and a three-run homer to left field by
Alec Honickel.
Elmhurst scored a single run in the seventh and three runs in what proved to be a decisive eighth to regain a 15-11 lead.
Carroll's final run came on a solo homer by Callahan in the eighth.
The Pioneers utilized seven different pitchers in the battle with
Zach Tuss, who worked 1 1/3 innings, taking the loss.
Freddie March went 4-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs for Elmhurst.
GAME 2
Curtis Sheahan earned a complete-game victory in the finale for Carroll, yielding two runs in scattering 11 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Sheahan, a 6-foot-4 senior left-hander who improved to 3-2 overall, faced 40 hitters in the impressive outing forcing 11 ground outs and eight fly outs in the process.
Callahan went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for the Pioneers, who generated a 10-hit attack. Pfaffle and
Justin Baker each added two hits.
Carroll scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, fueled on a two-run blast over the left-field fence by Callahan (his seventh of the season) and solo homer to left field by Baker.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI single to center field by Honickel.
Elmhurst scored a single run in the top of the seventh to trim the deficit to 4-1 but Carroll immediately responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to ultimately put the game out of reach.
Danny Glampe contributed a run-scoring single, Pfaffle had an RBI sacrifice fly out to center field and Callahan added a run-scoring single.
Kevin Johlie went 3-for-5 and drove in a run for Elmhurst, which dropped to 9-13 in conference and 13-16 overall.
