Bradley and Roberts Deal in Split

Carroll put runners on base every inning in both games

Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University softball team dropped the first game but won the second to stay at .500 in the CCIW against North Central today at Kilgour Field. The Pioneers fell 0-4, but returned the favor in game two by shutting out the Cardinals 5-0.

The Pioneers (9-9, 5-5 CCIW) hit the ball well all day, but couldn't get a run across in game one. The hits paid off in game two as they finally broke the scoreless streak in the fifth inning. Sierra Grubor collected four total hits in six at-bats while scoring a run and collecting an RBI. Claudia Spencer added two RBIs, while Mathena Higgins scored two of the five Pio runs. Maria Mundt tallied the lone extra-base hit of the day with a double in game two.

Grace Bradley and Breanna Roberts both had successful outings in game two. Bradley took a perfect game into the fifth inning before surrendering two back-to-back hits. Roberts came on in relief for the final three innings, only allowing two more hits. Both pitchers collected two strikeouts and pitched a combined 86 pitches.

Game 1

Amanda Osterhus went the distance in game one but surrendered four hits that led to four runs, while two were unearned. Osterhus struck out eight and walked two.

The Pioneers left runners on base in every inning. In the top of the second, Rath made it to third base on a lead-off walk, but two ground outs and a strikeout left her stranded. North Central added its three first runs in the top of the third after two singles and a double brought in the three.

Allyssa Demma led off the bottom of the fourth with a first-pitch single through the left side that eventually landed her on third, but a popup ended the inning. The Cardinals picked up another run, this time unearned in the top of the sixth to lead 4-0.

With one out and the bases loaded, a play at the plate and a pop-up to third base in foul territory left three Pios on base. Carroll had one more chance in the bottom of the 7th with both Grubor and Higgins on base, but could not complete the comeback.

Game 2

The Pioneers got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning, with Mundt's double to left field that took a weird hop to send her to second. A single from Higgins and an infield single from Grubor scored Mundt. Both Kaylee Learman walked to load the bases, and an RBI walk by Rath scored Higgins. Spencer's two-out, two-RBI single scored Learman and Grubor, and nearly Rath as well.

Carroll added the fifth run in the top of the seventh. Demma battled for a seven-pitch at-bat before getting a single to center field to score Higgins.

Roberts gave up her two singles in the bottom of the seventh, but two popups to second base put away the inning and the game.

Carroll will get back on the road and take a quick trip to Carthage on Thursday, April 8 for a two-game series with the Firebirds. Carthage, who started the season ranked in the NFCA Top 25, is 7-5 and 5-3 in the CCIW.
