WAUKESHA, Wis. -
Dylan Callahan went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs as the Carroll University baseball team defeated North Park University 6-4 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin regular-season finale at Frame Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The victory took on added significance as it was the 20th victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 14-18 in conference and 20-20 overall.
It was the first time head coach
Stein Rear and the Pioneers have reached the milestone 20-victory plateau since 2018 and was the program's highest winning percentage in the CCIW since 1988.
Carroll scored four runs on three hits to quickly overcome an early 1-0 deficit in the momentum-building bottom of the first inning, ignited on a two-run double to left center by Callahan and followed by a two-run home run to left field by
Mitchell Massino (his ninth of the season to move into a tie for the team lead with
Benton Holly).
The Pioneers' final runs came in the second on a two-out two-run double to right-center field by Callahan to extend the lead to 6-1.
North Park, which dropped to 11-18 in conference and 16-19 overall, answered with two runs in the third and a single run in the sixth but couldn't get any closer.
Brad Vosters and
Trevor Benz each added a hit for Carroll, which finished with six hits (four for extra bases), didn't commit and error and won the regular-season series 3-1.
Drew McDermid was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks through five complete innings.
The Pioneers utilized six pitchers in the contest with
Nick Evert,
Jake Nitch,
Josh Streu,
Dawson Kiphart and
Josh Nitch combining to yield one run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks over the course of the final four innings.
Carroll entered the day in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings and awaits the final seedings for the upcoming CCIW Tournament, scheduled to begin Monday, May 17th.
